The Perry High School Social Studies Department believes that students need to develop a sense of historical consciousness to make the world comprehensible. Students who understand the past are better equipped to interpret current events, defend human rights, and work for justice when confronted with oppression. We have a long history of excellence and success in social studies education. Here are a few highlights of our program:
- Our social studies faculty offers 98 years of experience in social studies education, 65 of which have been at Perry High School.
- Courses emphasize problem based learning to prepare students for college and the work force by building important skills such as creative thinking, inquiry, collaboration, and communication.
- Teachers utilize Google classroom and classroom websites to give students 24/7 access to learning.
- We offer AP US History, AP Government, and several honors level classes.
- Guest speakers in our classrooms include philanthropists, non-profit leaders, military personnel, social service executives, lawyers, Peace Corps volunteers, AmeriCorps volunteers, and business leaders.
- Students have the opportunity to take field trips to the Department of Homeland Security ICE office, the International Services Center, the Islamic Center of Cleveland, homeless shelters, soup kitchens, the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, and The City Club of Cleveland.
- Students in Perry Service Learning invest $2,000 each year to deserving non-profits in Northeast Ohio through the Magnified Giving Student Philanthropy program.
- Through our Perry Service Learning program, students volunteer more than 10,000 hours annually with organizations meeting unmet needs in our community.
